Mile Sterjovski (born May 27, 1979 in Wollongong , New South Wales ) is an Australian football player . In addition to being Australian, Sterjovski is also a citizen of North Macedonia .
Club career
The attacking midfielder with Macedonian roots made his first appearances in the first Australian league with his home team, the Wollongong Wolves , at the age of 16 . From 1997 he played for Sydney United and Parramatta Power in the National Soccer League . When the newcomer OSC Lille was looking for reinforcements for the 2000/01 season in the French first division, Sterjovski joined the club and was able to establish himself there. The greatest success with Lille was winning the UI Cup in the 2003/04 season .
The following year he moved to the Swiss champions FC Basel , where he immediately became a regular player and was able to repeat the championship success again. In the 2005/06 season, FCB just missed another championship title, but Sterjovski was able to advance to the quarter-finals with FC Basel in the UEFA Cup. In the 2006/07 season he won the Cup with Basel. For the following season he was no longer considered by coach Christian Gross and therefore moved to the Turkish first division promoted Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ , where he scored a goal in his debut. In January 2008 he moved to the English club Derby County , 18 months later he moved back to Australia and has since played as a marquee for Perth Glory . After moving to Dalian Aerbin in China in early 2012 , he returned to the A-League in mid-2012 and signed a contract with the Central Coast Mariners . On April 20, 2013 he was able to celebrate his first Australian championship after a 2-0 win against the Western Sydney Wanderers .
National team
Mile Sterjovski also plays for the Australian national soccer team . With the U-20 selection , he took part in the 1999 U-20 World Cup in Nigeria. He made his senior team debut against Scotland in 2000 and was part of the 2001 Confederations Cup line-up a year later when they finished third with a 1-0 win over Brazil. In 2004 he won the OFC Nations Cup with Australia . After Guus Hiddink became national coach in 2005, he was no longer used in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , but was still part of the 2006 World Cup squad .
Under Hiddink's successor Pim Verbeek , Sterjovski qualified with the Australian national team for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
