Teams from German-speaking countries
The DFB team started with a bang in the previous year when they were U-18s and vice-European champions. The later group winners Paraguay were defeated 4-0. Enrico Kern scored 3 goals but injured himself. After two defeats against Nigeria and Costa Rica, the team then retired as bottom of the group after the preliminary round. The composition of the squad corresponded to the crisis in German football at the time in the national team area. Very few players were already in the first men's teams in the squad, let alone regular players (regular players like Sebastian Deisler, Fabian Ernst, Sebastian Schindzielorz and Markus Pröll received no approval from their clubs; players like Sebastian Kehl (Abitur), Manuel Benthin and Bernd Korzynietz ( injured) could not participate for other reasons). After all, 6 out of 18 players came from second division clubs, including 3 clubs that were relegated from the second division at the end of the 1998/99 season. The other careers of the players also speak volumes. Except for Timo Hildebrand, no player made it into the senior national team. Only Wessels, Kern, Timm and Mutzel made it to some extent to become regular players in their clubs, but consistently commuting between the 1st and 2nd league. Many players later joined clubs in the 2nd division and the amateur area, where they were not always able to establish themselves as regular players. Thomas Lechner's career was tragic: shortly before he had a professional contract with 1. FC Kaiserslautern, he had a fatal accident in a motorcycle accident in 2000.
