Kōji Nakata ( Japanese 中 田 浩 二 Nakata Kōji ; born July 9, 1979 in Ōtsu , Shiga ) is a Japanese former football player .
With the Japanese national soccer team , for which he was used more than 50 times, he played, among other things, the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where he and his team advanced to the round of 16 as a regular. When Japan won the 2004 Asian Cup in China, Nakata made several appearances and finally scored the decisive goal to make it 2-1 in the final against China (final score 3-1). In the preliminary round from Japan at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Nakata only played a part in the last game against Brazil .
By moving to FC Basel in the spring of 2006, Nakata was the first Japanese national player in the service of a Swiss football club.
