Genia Nikolayeva ; actually Eugenia Nikolajewa (born January 2, 1904 in Saint Petersburg , Russian Empire ; † January 13, 2001 in Los Angeles ) was a German- American actress who appeared in many German feature films in the 1930s.

Life

The daughter of a German and a Russian came to Berlin early with her parents. She received ballet lessons and had her first dance appearance in the Wintergarten Varieté in 1920. In 1921/22 she danced at the ballet of the Königsberg City Theater and then joined the ensemble of the choreographer Ernst Matray . She made guest appearances with his troupe in England and South America before appearing again in Berlin in 1925. From 1926 to 1930 she was a solo dancer at the Berlin State Opera under the ballet master Max Terpis .

In 1930 she made her debut as an actress in the revue Alles Schwindel , followed by roles in several revues and operettas. At the same time, the film became aware of her and gave Genia Nikolajewa several dance appearances or minor, sometimes, as in the crime film Shot at Dawn , also major supporting roles.

The actress, who was considered a “ half-Jew ”, received fewer and fewer tasks despite her permission to play. In 1938 she emigrated to the USA and also worked there on several films. Then she worked at Warner Bros. in the administration. From 1937 until his death in 1997 she was married to the film editor Carl Forcht, who also emigrated .

During her lifetime, she handed over her dance-related documents to the German Dance Archive in Cologne .
