Opera singer Maria Seydlitz has just left her fiancé because he gave her the choice between husband and profession when she received a telegram from New York: A stranger hired her for a high fee at the theater. Maria accepts the offer. On the ship to New York City , she meets the rich Doña Juana de Villafranca and the likeable Dr. Heinz Fritsch know. At the same time, she sees that another man is constantly watching her. He finally introduces himself to her as Fred Liners and accuses her of wanting to marry his rich uncle, the financial tycoon and theater owner William Liners, for the sake of money. Maria is horrified and Heinz stands protectively in front of her. Fred announces that he will fight Maria in New York to prevent her from marrying William. In fact, her ID is missing when she wants to leave the ship, but Heinz can get her a replacement document.
The theater turns out to be a Broadway revue stage and the revue director Bal is not very enthusiastic about having to include an opera singer in his program. Maria is now paid, but cannot perform. The encounter with William Liners also turns out differently than expected: Although Maria rebukes him for not being a commodity to be brought to America because of the intention to marry, William cannot remember ever having seen her. Maria was just one of the many singers he'd seen on a trip through Europe and spontaneously engaged. William, however, takes pleasure in the idea of presenting Maria to his lavish nephew and his sister Gloria as a possible fiancée and now takes care of Maria more. He has the main role of the Revue reassigned, so that instead of the vain Minnie May, Maria now plays the role. He invites Maria to dinner and gives her presents. When Fred sneakily tips the press that Maria and William want to get married, and it is in all the newspapers the next day, Maria is desperate because she loves Heinz. He is planning his departure to Europe.
In order to finally spoil Maria's stay in America, Gloria plans an intrigue: Shortly before the premiere of the revue, she lets Minnie May appear with Maria with valuable jewelry. Minnie May hides a gem in Maria's handbag and then accuses her of theft. Maria is arrested. Fred, however, is appalled by his sister Gloria's behavior. Together with Heinz he succeeds in extracting a written confession from Gloria of what she did and in doing so brings Maria back to the theater in good time. Heinz pretends that he only wanted to help her as a compatriot, but not out of affection. If Minnie May had already hoped to play the lead role, Maria now appears as planned and Minnie May is arrested. Heinz goes to the port where his ship to Europe is waiting. After the end of the review, Fred is supposed to drive Maria to a dinner with William, among others, but asks him to take a detour to the port. She goes to Heinz on board to go back to Europe with him. She sings " Do I have to, do I have to go out to the city center " and he adds "... and you, my darling, are going with me". They both embrace.

And you ride my darling is based on the novel by Hans Rudolf Berndorff . The film was shot from July to September 1936 on the open-air site in Neubabelsberg and on the Bremen passenger ship . It had its premiere on January 15, 1937 in the Gloria-Palast in Berlin .

For the lexicon of international films , And you, my sweetheart drive me, was a “hopelessly outdated revue film, completely tailored to Marika Rökk. The musical and dance interludes of the film didn't really spark off in the first year of its premiere. "
