Georg Jacoby (director)
Georg Gustav Franz Jacoby (born July 21, 1882 in Mainz , † February 21, 1964 in Munich ) was a German author and director .
Life
Georg Jacoby was born in Mainz in July 1882. Through his father, the theater director and comedy author Wilhelm Jacoby , he had contact with the stage at an early age. He began his career as an actor at the city theaters of Bremen and Königsberg , but then decided to switch to directing and went to Berlin . In 1913 he was able to direct the later Literaria Film for the first time. His first scripts, which he wrote at the suggestion of Rosa Porten , also date from this time . During the First World War he made propaganda films for the Image and Film Office (BUFA) and for Mars-Film.
In 1916 Jacoby received the Knight's Cross of the Alexander Order from Prince and Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria for directing the film Bogdan Stimoff .
After the war ended, he moved to UFA and produced educational films. Jacoby married the actress Elga Brink , worked increasingly as a screenwriter and shot comedies, monumental works ( Quo vadis with Emil Jannings ), erotic-exotic subjects and legal dramas. With the start of the sound film, he concentrated on non-binding and shallow entertainment. His film Moral and Love , which was banned by the Nazis in 1933, was also banned from this time .
Jacoby continued to work for UFA. During the filming of Hot Blood , Jacoby met his future second wife Marika Rökk . With her, Johannes Heesters and a constant team from producers to cinematographers, choreographers and composers, Jacoby shot a series of typical “Jacoby Rökk films” in the 1930s. After the end of National Socialism, Jacoby was banned from working in Germany and Austria until 1947 because of his NSDAP membership. It was not until 1950 that he continued his work in the tried and tested style, but also produced comedies and crime films again, in which he continued his style of the late 1920s.
From 1940 until his death he was married to Marika Rökk , from the marriage Gabriele Jacoby emerged.
Jacoby died in Munich in February 1964 . His grave is in the Wiesbaden North Cemetery .
Works
The exact number of Jacoby's films is disputed. Sometimes there is talk of 210 feature films, other sources count around 230 films.
