Erdgift is the title of a silent film drama that Paul Otto realized in 1919 for Vera-Filmwerke in Hamburg, based on a script that he wrote together with Georg Jacoby based on the literary template " Der Erdgeist " by Frank Wedekind , with Grit Hegesa in the lead role. The film featured such actors as Kurt Lilien , Hermann Nesselträger , Ralph Arthur Roberts and Arthur Schröder .

action

Paimann's film lists describe the content as follows:

“A sculptor becomes famous through a work he modeled on a girl, but the woman becomes his ruin. His wife and child leave him, and when he sees himself betrayed by her, he destroys his work of art and finds death under its ruins. The originator of these conflicts, however, marries a prince. "

background

The tragedy in four acts “Der Erdgeist” was the first part of his “Lulu” trilogy, which Frank Wedekind first sketched in 1892 and then brought to the stage in 1895. Paul Otto was the first to work on the material for the cinema. Already the title earth poison instead of earth spirit suggests that, although they did rely on its pull, they would rather avoid copyright disputes.

The film was a production by Vera-Filmwerke GmbH. in Hamburg-Alsterdorf , Alsterkrugchaussee 192–202. Hans Kampf was in front of the camera , the film structures were created by the architect Kralsche. The actor Carl Geppert had his first film appearance in 1919 in "Erdgift".

The film was censored in December 1919. While the police station in Munich under No. 38074, 38075, 38076, 38077, 38078 wanted to ban completely, the police in Berlin left it under No. 43671 in the case of a youth ban, which on November 8, 1920 the Reichsfilmcensorship in Berlin under No. 682 confirmed; the film, which was awarded by Verafilm , was also called “Lil's Reigen” in Austria.

In a paid performance for interested parties, it was shown on December 9, 1919 in the Lessing Theater in Hamburg. On January 14, 1920, the Motivhaus film theater in Berlin was reopened on Hardenbergstrasse with him .
