action

Richard Hoffmann is an important opera singer who has been in danger of becoming lonely since the early death of his wife. What he has left are his little daughter Gloria and his brother-in-law Bernhard, who looks after the great artist like a nanny and leaves him with nothing to miss. Professionally, Hoffmann rushes from success to success, his tours are fully booked, his fans are enthusiastic about his singing art. During his last appearance shortly before a tour to the USA, Hoffmann had to flee from the enthusiastic crowd and ended up in a small bar called "Zum narrowen Handtuch", where he met a young woman named Lilli, who presented himself as a calculating and deceitful "Siren" proves. Lilli is connected to the Kapellmeister Erwin Richter, but that doesn't prevent her from ensnaring the Kammersänger, whom she also recognizes immediately. She hopes for career advantages for herself and her fiancé and therefore asks Hoffmann to come to her table. After curfew, she lures the artist into her parents' house, where Richter is already waiting. At this moment, he “coincidentally” strummers his own composition, which Richard is enthusiastic about, not least because he is about to fall in love with the wrong Lilli and is therefore in the best of moods. Lilli's parents also have selfish motives when they dream of a connection between their daughter and the important singer: social advancement, the limelight and a lot of money.

While the dark clouds of conspiracy initiated by Lilli are brewing over Hoffmann's head, Richard's daughter Gloria met the charming, blonde sculptor Escha on the playground, and she quickly made friends with the toddler. Gloria desperately wants Escha to get to know her father and uncle, and she keeps dragging the young woman with her. Escha, in turn, does not want to disappoint the little one and therefore follows her without hesitation. The artist was soon accepted by the Hoffmann family as a good friend in the family. Richard Hoffmann has meanwhile still not realized that Lilli is playing the wrong game with him and gives her gifts in abundance. He is also responsible for the performance of Erwin Richter's musical effusions. As Hoffmann is preparing for his performance of farewell to Tosca, he finally realizes who is the spirit child Lilli is. In his pain of knowledge, he sings Caravadossi's aria with a fervor that has never been known. The next day, Hoffmann, daughter Gloria, brother-in-law Bernhard and Escha board the ship that will bring everyone to New York for a better and happier future.

Reviews

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung wrote about the Richard Tauber film: “Melodie der Liebe” ... brings the wonderful, soft voice of the artist to such an excellent level as one has seldom heard in talkies. Richard Tauber sings a few songs, and the great scene from Tosca, all with perfect art. (...) Georg Jacoby provided the direction with some very nice ideas. "

The May 1, 1932 issue of Vienna's Neuer Freie Presse read: “Richard Tauber adorns this sound film with all the glories of his voice. (...) In general, it is a pleasure how magnificently this film is presented. There is Szöke Szakall as a brother-in-law and good-natured, intrusive guardian spirit of the chamber singer. The constantly insulted expression on his full moon face is irresistibly comical. Ida Wüst and Karl Ettlinger as the parents of the calculating young lady mean a virtuoso grotesque in themselves. (...) Georg Jacoby's director has concocted a mixture of sentimentality and humor in this sound film, which is sure to have the greatest impact. "
