The daughter of tenor Peter Unkel (1880–1942) had her first film appearance at the age of four in Lupu Pick's historical drama Napoleon on St. Helena with Werner Krauss in the role of Napoleon . In the following year she received her first leading role as Richard Tauber's daughter in Melody of Love . For this portrayal, the child star was praised by film reviews because of his natural charm. The film magazine “ Der Kinematograph ” showed the same reactions when Unkel embodied Viktor de Kowa's ward in Arthur Maria Rabenalt's Pappi in 1934 . In the 1930s Unkel was a very busy young actress, whether in homeland films such as Heideschulmeister Uwe Karsten and comedies such as stowaways by the Danish comedian duo " Pat & Patachon ". Occasionally she was seen in boy roles like in 1933 in Morals and Love and as Dauphin in the historical film Liselotte von der Pfalz with Renate Müller in the title role. As an adult, Unkel was able to continue her film career. In addition, from 1946 Unkel belonged to the ensemble of the cabaret Die Schaubude founded by Rudolf Schündlers . In addition, Unkel was also active as a speaker for radio and dubbing. She lent her voice to Brigitte Bardot in Frost on Young Blossoms , Nancy Olson in Canadian Pacific and Micheline Presle in the 1954 biopic Napoleon, among others .
