Pat & Patachon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pat (right) & Patachon

Pat & Patachon (original Fy og Bi ) was a Danish comedian duo of the silent movie era . It was embodied by Carl Schenstrøm (1881–1942) as Pat (original Fyrtaarnet: lighthouse) and Harald Madsen (1890–1949) as Patachon ( bivognen: trailer or sidecar). Between 1921 and 1940 both made about 55 films .

The proverbial expression like Pat and Patachon (also: like Pat and Patterchen ) jokingly describes the clumsy-looking juxtaposition of two people with very different physiques.

Film, flirtation og forlovelse, the first film with Schenstrøm and Madsen in the roles of the tramp Fyrtaarnet (newer notation: Fyrtårnet) and Bivognen originated in 1921 as an idea of the Danish director senior Lau Lauritzen , under whose guidance the next, the 30 silent films rotated were. The vagabond adventures of the lanky Fyrtaarnet and his stocky, plump companion Bivognen mostly show their interference in the everyday life of bourgeois society , which they use grotesque methods to achieve new love happiness or domestic chaos, and were successful box office hits in Europe ; a few film festivals were even held.

Even before they separated from Lauritzen in 1932, Schenstrøm and Madsen also made some sound films with other directors (e.g. Alf's Carpet 1929, in the roles of Bill and Alf, which were also performed as Pat & Patachon in German ). Since then, Pat & Patachon have shot almost exclusively abroad, most recently in Germany. Pat & Patachon only made one film in Denmark, their last: I de gode gamle dage (From the good old days) , which premiered in Copenhagen in 1940 .

After Schenstrøm's death in 1948 Madsen tried to treat the subject again together with Carl Reinholdz as Calle og Palle .

Posthumous arrangements and publications

In the 1950s, sound-synchronized P&P films appeared in full-length films that had been cut from the old silent film material. Carl Nørrested, film historian and Schenstrøm's grandson , sharply criticized these revisions.

The ZDF took 33 films from the Danish production company palladium and sent it to 59 episodes distributed from 1968 to 1970. For the next broadcasting 1984, the ZDF had the silent films of Hanns Dieter Hüsch as narrative resynchronize .

In 2005, 55 episodes appeared on DVD (7 DVD boxes, from Kinowelt) in the ZDF version with a narrative commentary by Hanns Dieter Hüsch. A comprehensive edition (e.g. from Denmark) is still pending.

The Pat & Patachon short films are mostly cuts to the usual silent film length of 20 minutes (10 minutes per reel / roll), some of which are worthy of criticism. It should be noted, however, that Pat & Patachon often only had supporting roles / short appearances in 3–4-hour silent films - as a humorous element in (quite serious) emotional dramas. From such silent film operas, all of the Pat & Patachon material was then cut into a more or less meaningful plot. Presumably her art from these long films can only be saved for the present in this form. Of course, this does not apply to her later appearances as the main actor or to the usual feature length films.

Origin of name

The term pat and patching appeared in the work Hesperus or 45 Hundposttage by the German writer Jean Paul , published in 1795 .

literature

Despite the great popularity of the duo in German-speaking countries, there is hardly any German literature about Pat and Patachon. One exception is the documentation published by Hauke Lange-Fuchs in 1980, in which, among other things, many sources from Denmark and Sweden were translated into German.
