action

The little mongrel child Moni grew up with foster parents in the Bavarian Alps. Because of her dark skin color, the girl is often teased by her classmates at school. She dreams of becoming a farmer and having a large farm with lots of animals. Miss Rieger, the girl's teacher, is concerned about the problem that has arisen with Moni's request. When Miss Rieger told the veterinarian Dr. Schumann lectures, he advises her to turn to a circus agency. Perhaps someone could be found there who could take Moni out of her village seclusion so that she no longer had to suffer from the color of her skin. A few days after Miss Rieger turned to the circus agent Ressel, Moni received a visit from the artist Casseno. He would like to incorporate the little one into his cowboy act with riding and lassoing. He has three children himself and can therefore deal with Moni well.

Moni was amazed to see her first performance in the circus, for the time being as a spectator. Little by little she befriends the other artist children, especially the blind Manuel, who has rehearsed a clown act with his grandfather Kaspar. Manuel also tells of her homesickness for the village in the Alps. The rehearsals for the new cowboy act are going on to Cassenos full of satisfaction. She stands in the ring during the knife-throwing act without any fear. After Kaspar's death, Moni slips into his role.

One day Moni's beloved teacher also attended a performance. She admires her former protégé with great joy. A roaring applause breaks down on the two children. Now Miss Rieger knows Moni is on the right track. When the girl found out shortly after the performance that her former teacher was there, Moni ran after her. Shortly before the train departs, she catches up with Fraulein Rieger and begs her to take her home. The artist Linda comes panting and calls Moni back. She tells how sad and alone Manuel sits in his car and can't understand that Moni has left him. Now the child knows that the circus has become his new world and goes back with Linda.
