Roy Woods

Roy Woods (born October 21, 1940 - January 29, 2004 ) was an American car racing driver and racing team owner.

Racing career

In addition to his work as a racing team owner and team boss, Roy Woods was also active as a driver himself. He competed in sports car races in North America, where he competed in the SCCA sports car championship and the Trans-Am series . He celebrated his first Trans-Am race win in 1972 together with George Follmer on an AMC Javelin at the racing event in Bryar .

He celebrated his greatest successes at the 12-hour race at Sebring , which he won in 1979 together with Bob Akin and Rob McFarlin in a Porsche 935 and two years later he finished second overall (this time with Ralph Kent-Cooke and Skeeter McKitterick as team partners) . His only appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans ended in 1979 with a retirement.

Woods competed in sports car races until 1982; During this time he was able to celebrate three overall and four class wins.

Success as a team owner

Woods led a successful Trans-Am team for many years. For his American Racing Associates team , Tony Adamowicz , Vic Elford , Brian Redman , Peter Revson , Milt Minter and George Follmer, who became the first driver champion of this racing series in 1972 on a car registered by Woods, went to the start.

Woods died in January 2004 of complications from leukemia .
