George Follmer (* 27. January 1934 in Phoenix ) is a retired American automobile - racing driver .
Career
Follmer was a Porsche 917 racing driver in the early 1970s who mostly competed in the USA , but also took part in the Interseries in Europe . In 1972 he finished second with a Porsche 917/10 for the Penske Racing Team CanAm champion, in 1974 behind his team mate Jackie Oliver with a Shadow DN4A Chevrolet.
In the 1973 season , when he was almost 40, Follmer competed eleven times in Formula 1 races for the Shadow team. His best finish was third in the Spanish Grand Prix . In total, he scored five World Cup points.
In the USA he took part in almost all racing series and also contested the Indianapolis 500 several times . He was considered a bon vivant at the time and was a test driver for the International Race of Champions Series until the 1980s . In 1999 he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America , which brings together eminent American racing drivers.
