1977 Silverstone 6-hour race
The 1977 Silverstone 6-hour race , also known as the Kosset World Manufacturers 6 Hours, Silverstone , took place on May 15 at the Silverstone Circuit and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The racing event in Silverstone was after the 24-hour race in Daytona (overall winner Hurley Haywood , John Graves and Dave Helmick in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR ) and the 6-hour race in Mugello (overall winner Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti in a Porsche 935 ) the third race of the brand world championship in 1977. Porsche demonstrated the strength that the German brand with its racing models had in this racing series. 13 Porsches were among the top 14 places in the final ranking. Was interrupted this Motorsport - hegemony only by the fourth-placed Faltz- BMW 320i of Ronnie Peterson and Helmut Kelleners .
The race influenced the work - Porsche 935 by Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx , as well as the Kremer Porsche squad run by bob wollek and John Fitzpatrick and the two Gelo-Racing.935 of Stommelen / Hezemans and taverns / Bell . From the pole position from Jochen Mass went to the races, which in qualifying with a time of 1: 25.910 minutes (average 197.729 km / h), the fastest lap was driven. Shortly behind was Bob Wollek in the Kremer Porsche.
Mass and Ickx led the first four hours of racing without a break, then an unplanned change of the brake pads forced the Porsche into the pits for 3 minutes and 30 seconds. As a result, Wollek briefly took the lead in the Kremer-935. The decision was made by a downpour one hour before the end of the race. While the entire field came to the pits to change tires, Mass simply drove on with slicks and continued at high speed. When he switched to rain tires shortly before the end of the race, he had gained a lead of three laps.
