Claude Ballot-Léna
Claude Ballot-Léna (born August 4, 1936 in Paris , † November 9, 1999 ) was a French racing driver .
Career
“ I'm part of the inventory here like an old toolbox,” said Claude Ballot-Léna in an interview in 1989 when he came to Le Mans for the twenty-third time to contest the 24-hour race .
The former boxer, tennis player and cyclist has proven his versatility in motorsport for over 30 years. He gained his first experience in small rallies and hill climbs in the French provinces in the early 1960s . The tall and brawny Frenchman also tried his hand at the monoposto briefly and became familiar with sports car racing in the mid-1960s . Four times - in 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1976 - he won the French GT Championship and in 1973 the European Championship.
He celebrated his greatest successes in endurance sports. In 1969 he and his long-time partner Guy Chasseuil won the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race in a Porsche 911 . In 1983, together with Bob Wollek , AJ Foyt and Preston Henn , he secured overall victory in a Porsche 935 at the Daytona 24-hour race . In Le Mans, only his two compatriots Henri Pescarolo and Bob Wollek and the Japanese Yōjirō Terada were at the start more often than him. In 1977 he achieved his only podium finish there with Peter Gregg in a Porsche 935 with third place overall. Ballot-Léna was on the top three podium 154 times in his career and secured 71 overall and class victories at a wide variety of racing events.
For many years he drove races in the IMSA GTP series in the USA , with occasional trips to NASCAR , where he also competed in the Daytona 500 . A few months before his death - he died in December 1999 of a long incurable illness - he gave an interview to the French magazine Auto Hebdo and looked back on his career. “ If I take stock today, I have no regrets. I never considered myself a high flyer. With the resources at my disposal, I've had a decent career behind me. It's enough for me when people later, when asked who was Ballot-Léna, simply answer: That was a racing driver. "
