Talladega 6 Hours 1978
The 6 Hours of Talladega 1978 , also 6 Hours of Talladega Camel GT Challenge, Talladega , took place on April 2nd on the Talladega Superspeedway and was the third round of the IMSA GT series and the fourth sports car world championship for drivers this year.
The race
Similar to the 24-hour race in Daytona , the race in Talladega took place on an oval course . While at the Daytona International Speedway just a steep curve during the endurance race was run, the Road Course of Talladega included both oval curves. In the routing of the road course, the track turned left at an angle of almost 45 degrees into the infield after crossing the start-finish line and after a few slow curves and short straights led back to the oval track shortly afterwards. This track variant had become necessary in order to sustainably reduce the speed on what was then the fastest racetrack in the world. Although the drivers had to brake their cars hard on the start-and-finish straight and drive through the slow corners of the infield, average speeds of over 200 km / h were achieved.
The race was won by Peter Gregg and Brad Frisselle in their Porsche 935 with a lead of eight laps on the Whittington brothers Bill and Don , who also drove a Porsche 935.
