Ernst Mayer (born January 21, 1815 in Prachatice ; † March 12, 1891 ibid) was a Czech doctor and politician , long-term mayor of Prachatice, a member of the Bohemian Parliament and the Austrian Imperial Council .

biography

Ernst Mayer came from a family of doctors in Vorarlberg . His grandfather, an experienced surgeon, settled in Prachatice, his father Martin, a surgeon by profession, was mayor of that city from 1820 to 1836. Mayer's mother Barbara was the daughter of the citizen and dyer Adalbert Spinka.

Ernst Mayer studied medicine and surgery at the University of Vienna, and for a while worked as an assistant and associate professor at the medical faculty . With his wife Ernestina, daughter of the university professor Andreas Ignaz Wawruch , he returned to his home town of Prachatice in the early 1850s.

Ernst Mayer was Mayor of Prachatice from 1861 until his death in 1891. During his tenure, the grammar school , the municipal theater and the observation tower on Libín were built. Together with Václav Niklas, he tried to establish the bilingual medical association in the Prachatice district. From 1872 he was a member of the Austrian Imperial Council. On February 25, 1869, Ernst Mayer received a pre-license for a railway from the Bavarian border via Wallern , Písek and Příbram to the Bohemian Western Railway , but he could no longer witness the opening of the Číčenice – Haidmühle railway in 1893.

The Mayer couple had six children, of whom three daughters and one son reached adulthood.
