The Gymnasium Prachatice ( Czech Gymnázium Prachatice ) is a neo-renaissance building in Prachatice built in 1896/97 , in which a purely German-speaking school was first held. Czech has been used as the language of instruction since 1920.

School history

The first school building in Prachatice is already occupied in the 14th century. Numerous baccalaureates and masters from the University of Prague , established in 1348, found their first employment there. Famous students of this Latin school were Christian von Prachatitz , Jan Hus and Hans Puchsbaum . In the 16th century the crenellated and painted literary school was built between the Jakobuskirche and the Piseker Tor . Wilhelm von Rosenberg also promoted the literary society , which was dedicated to choral singing, art and science.

Felix Spinka, Mayor of Prachatice from 1837–1838, died in 1862, leaving behind a foundation with several pieces of land, farm buildings and 2000 guilders to establish a German secondary school in Prachatice. Barbara Wimbersky donated her house No. 109 as a school building. The grammar school was finally started on October 5, 1865.

Due to the increased space requirement, Mayor Johann Zdiarsky , who had already set up a small student residence on the first floor of his house on Ringplatz in 1885 , had a new school building built, which was ceremoniously opened on September 27, 1897. In 1904 the Eule dormitory ( Sova in Czech ) was added by master builder Rudolf Zobel .

In 1920, a Czech-speaking branch was set up in what had been a purely German-speaking grammar school. The progressive Czechization and the falling number of German-speaking students finally led to the German-speaking students moving to Budweis and Krummau in 1923 , so that it was now a purely Czech school. After the occupation of Prachatice in the autumn of 1938, the school operations were moved to Vodňany and completely stopped in December 1940, with some of the students being moved to Strakonice .
