Hans Puchsbaum or Puchspaum (* before 1390; † 1454 in Vienna ) was an architect and master craftsman of the Gothic and between 1444 and 1454 head of the building works of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna .

Life

In 1418 Puchsbaum was briefly involved in the construction of the Ulm Minster , from 1432 he can be traced back to Vienna . Presumably as early as 1444 he was initially head of the cathedral construction works of Sankt Stephan for two years , in 1446 his employment was for life, where he received a whole vision and the in-house response of the pause and the tom house, the churches, and what is to be pounded on it , was transferred. At the same time, he appointed Laurenz Spenning as his parlier, who succeeded him as master builder when he died eight years later.

Works

Puchsbaum's first independent building was the new building of the choir of the parish church in Steyr , with which he was commissioned in 1443. After his appointment as master builder in Vienna, he redesigned the cathedral longhouse, which was still under construction, into a relay hall and prepared the vaulting. In 1450 he laid the foundations of the north tower, the construction of which was started according to new plans only after his death. The renovation work on the south tower, which was hit by a lightning strike in 1449, was more urgent. In 1452 he and his Parlier Spenning renewed the memorial of the spinner on the cross , which was destroyed in 1446 ,

Despite the short span of a decade as master builder of St. Stephan, many works had been attributed to him in older research, for which Laurenz Spenning is now considered the author. Compared to the work of his successor, his style can be described as more cubic and not very detailed.

legend

The legend had taken hold of the person of Hans Puchsbaum early on, and various versions have been passed down. What they all have in common is the fact that Puchsbaum, either through a pact with the devil or through a jealous old master or old journeyman, dies while falling from the scaffolding. Already according to Friedrich Tilmez (1722) that big mistake / as it is known everywhere at day / and is held by the common people in front of it / easily rebutted , but behind the legend there may actually be a tragic construction accident or a generation conflict .

reception

In 1872 Puchsbaumgasse and in 1875 Puchsbaumplatz in Vienna- Favoriten were named after him.
