history

The settlement Strakonice was originally one of the gold panning sites from the Celtic times in South Bohemia . It was built around a moated castle at the mouth of the Volyňka in the Otava . The Strakonice Castle was initially the residence of the Bavor von Strakonitz and came to the Order of St. John in the 15th century . The settlement of residents in hereditary subservience developed into a small town that received town charter in 1367 .

During the Hussite Wars Jan Žižka occupied the town in 1420, but was unable to take possession of the castle. In a representation at the castle gate he is shown in armor on horseback with an iron flail in his hand and a retinue of some soldiers; to the right is Przibik von Koczow , who is shooting an arrow at him. In 1421 the Prior General of the Johanniter moved his seat from the Lesser Quarter of Prague to Strakonice, in 1694 the Johanniter returned to Prague . The castle remained in their possession until 1925.

A prosperous Jewish community of traders lived in Strakonice from the 16th century, remains of the ghetto and a Jewish cemetery have been preserved. The synagogue in Strakonice was demolished in 1976. From the beginning of the 19th century Fese was produced in Strakonitz and exported to the Middle East . Since 1891 there was a railway connection to Budweis . During the industrialization further companies were added, in 1930 a motorcycle factory.
