The river Otava (German Wottawa , formerly Wattawa , on the upper reaches also Ohe ) arises in the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic at the confluence of the mountain rivers Křemelná and Vydra . It mostly flows in a north-easterly direction through the cities of Sušice , Horažďovice , Strakonice and Písek and flows into the Vltava in the Orlík dam near the Zvíkov castle .

The upper course of the river from Čeňkova Pila to Rejštejn is fast, with many rapids, boulders and irregular swells in the river bed . The Otava Valley is narrow and forested. In the course of the course of the river near Sušice , the flow speed calms down and the Otava takes on the character of a calm river up to the Orlík dam .

The river is dammed in the Orlík dam on its last 22 kilometers to the mouth at Zvíkov Castle . In the bends of the river below the mouth of the Lomnice, the Otava formed further rapids and shoals up to the damming, of which the raging Annenstrom ( Anenské proudy ) around the rocky spur of Svatá Anna was considered particularly dangerous.

history

As a result of the population's interest in the historical sites of the region since the end of the 19th century, the československých turistů club, in honor of August Sedláček, left the 25 km long Sedláček between the Zvíkov and Písek castles on the lower reaches of the river between 1924 and 1928 -Place the dough (Sedláčkova stezka). The lower section of the path between Štědronín and Zvíkov was flooded at the beginning of the 1960s by the Orlík reservoir, which raised the water level in the valley by 35 m.
