August Sedláček (born August 28, 1843 in Mladá Vožice , † January 15, 1926 in Písek ) was a Czech historian and castle researcher.

Life

After graduating from high school in Písek in 1863 , he studied from 1863 to 1867 at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague . He also attended lectures by the historians Václav Vladivoj Tomek , Antonín Gindely , Constantin von Höfler and the archaeologist Jan Erazim Vocel and the philologist Jan Kvíčala . Archivist Josef Emler also had a great influence on him . After completing his studies, he worked as a professor of history and languages such as Latin, Czech and German in Litomyšl until 1869 , then in Rychnov nad Kněžnou until 1875 and in Tábor until 1899 . In Rychnov he also met his wife Ernestina Havlatová, whom he married in 1871. After the death of his wife he worked as an archivist in Písek from 1899. In 1922 he married Teraza Bercalová, a teacher who was half his age.

Sedláček was a nature lover. At an advanced age he bought a game reserve to be closer to nature. In it he planted rare trees and flowers. But he was also a great patriot, and tears came to his eyes every time he heard the Czech anthem.

He has been interested in historical topography and castle studies since his youth. He published the result of his twenty years of work in the 15-volume work Hrady, zámky a tvrze království Českého (Castles, chateaus and fortresses of the Kingdom of Bohemia). He collected a large amount of material in numerous archives. The romantic work by Franz Alexander Heber from the first half of the 19th century served as a model . His genealogical and topographical card index alone contained over 400,000 sheets. A number of books have been left as handwritten drafts. He published numerous articles on the history of Bohemian cities in his 1,500-page work Dějiny královského krajského města Písku nad Otavou (History of the Royal Pisek on the Otava). The book was published on the 10th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia . For his work he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Charles University.

Sedláček's 15-volume castles, chateaus and forts of the Kingdom of Bohemia are still among the standard works of Czech castle research today. Sedláček presents a stage of castle research that primarily and in great detail dealt with the written sources. The following direction, represented primarily by Dobroslava Menclová (1904–1978), is characterized by an art-historical methodology aimed at the structural fabric of the castles.

According to František Kutnar , it was a monumental work, "... a final testimony to what the tireless work of an individual can achieve in science." The book not only contains the history of almost 3,000 objects and their historical development, but also offers additional topographical, heraldic and genealogical material. The author collected the individual references in archives in Vienna, Berlin, Dresden, Königsberg, Bautzen, Munich and Breslau. The work was reissued after 1995. The work was also published on CD-ROM in 2000.
