Josef Emler

Josef Emler (born January 10, 1836 in Libáň ; † February 10, 1899 in Prague ) was a Czech archivist and as a historian professor at Prague University .

biography

Emler attended high school in Jičín , studied history at the University of Vienna and was a member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research from 1859 to 1861; then high school teacher in Prague. Through the mediation of František Palacký , he became a civil servant at the Bohemian State Archives, since 1864 at the City Archives and from 1871 was City archivist. He edited the texts on Archaeological Monuments (Památky archeologické) by Karel František Vladislav Zapa from 1862 to 1863 and worked at the Rieger Encyclopedia (Riegrův Slovník naučný) in 1864 . Furthermore, Emler was an employee in the Society of the Patriotic Museum in Bohemia and from 1871 to 1890 editor of the museum's magazine. Josef Emler became a member and secretary for the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences in 1871 . In 1872 he completed his habilitation at the University of Prague in the subject of historical auxiliary science archival studies and became associate professor of history with lectures and exercises in German. After the University of Prague separated into a German-speaking and a Czech university in 1882, Josef Emler became a full professor at the Czech University in 1887 and taught in the Czech language. Since December 1876 he was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

Act

Emler valued the editorial and historical work of František Palacký and endeavored to be his successor. His publications are known among experts and are valued as a source. Emler wrote articles for the magazines Politics (Politika) and National Sheets ( Národní listy ) and worked at Svatoborm , Matice česká and historical association with. As a staff member in the regional archives, later in the Prague archives, he worked on extensive sources on Bohemian history and continued Karel Jaromír Erben's work on the further publication of the Regesta . In the disputes about the authenticity of the Grünberger manuscript and the Königinhofer manuscript , he stood at the side of those who supported their authenticity.
