Karel Jaromír Erben (born November 7, 1811 in Miletín , † November 21, 1870 in Prague ) was a Czech archivist and historian, collector of folk tales and folk songs, as a writer representative of Romanticism .

Life

Erben began his education at the grammar school in Hradec Králové and continued it with a study of philosophy and later law at Charles University in Prague . In 1837 he became an intern at the Criminal Court of the Prague Magistrate and one year later he was employed by the tax office in Prague. In 1842 he married Betyna Mečířová (1818–1857), who came from Žebrák , in Zdice , and in 1843 he worked for František Palacký at the Prague National Museum . There he took on the task of sorting and cataloging documents in the archives of Tábor and Domažlice as archivist , also in the hope that some of the documents there will be handed over to the National Museum.

In 1848 Karel Jaromír Erben was short-term editor of the daily Pražské noviny ; gave up this activity after the publication of the constitution of 1848 and in 1850 became secretary and archivist of the Bohemian State Museum in Prague for one year . From 1851 to 1870 the city archivist in Prague, he arranged the holdings of this archive and devoted himself to its extensive folklore collections and their publication.

He is buried in the Olšany Cemetery in Prague.

Publications

In the selection and interpretation of fairy tales and legends, heirs were interested in interpersonal relationships, especially between men and women, but also in dealing with guilt and atonement when the claims they represent in basic relationships and basic rights in human coexistence. In his view, offenses were often punished too harshly by fate and people, who in turn were powerless against the forces of nature that acted on them.

  • Prostonárodní české písně a říkadla (Folk Bohemian songs and counting rhymes), a five-part, strongly romantically influenced work with considerable sales success, 1864.

In addition to collecting folklore art, Karl Jaromir Erben also tried to critically examine and influence it in terms of his worldview.

Film adaptations from the fairy tale collection

Settings

Antonín Dvořák set Erben's ballad Svatební Košile to music as the cantata Die Geisterbraut for soloists, choir and orchestra op. 69 (1884). He also set ballads from the collection of heirs to music in his symphonic poems Der Wassermann op.107, Die Mittagshexe op.108 , Das goldene Spinnrad op.109 and Die Waldtaube op.110 .

Zdeněk Fibich set Aquarius from the Kytice collection to music as his opus 15 in the form of a melodrama .

Appreciations

In December 1856 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . In 2003 the asteroid (40106) heirs was named after him.
