The Third Prince is a Czechoslovak fairy tale film based on the fairy tale The Twin Brothers (O dvou bratřích) by Karel Jaromír Erben from 1982.
action
Prince Jindrich of the land of the lion leaves his parents and does not return. The king and queen remain mourning. A gypsy girl prophesies to the grieving queen that she will be happy again in a year and that her son will return in three years.
The prophecy comes true: after a year, the queen will have twin sons. The twin brothers, Jaromír and Jaroslav, are growing rapidly: after a year they are seven-year-olds, after two they are fourteen-year-olds, and after three years they are adults.
When the twins became young men, the father demands that one of them must move out, since only one can rule in the land of the lion. Jaromír discovers the painting of a beauty in black curls. The king explains to him that this girl was responsible for the death of Prince Jindrich and that she died with him. Only then do the twins find out about the existence of their older brother. Jaromír learns from the gypsy girl that the princess in the picture is still alive and sets out to look for her. Before Jaromír leaves, the twins swap swords to see how the other is doing.
Finally Jaromír finds the girl in the picture. It is Princess Milena who initially rejects him. She warns him that her hand is not cheap and that he must complete three tasks. Jaromír accepts. In a chest in his bedchamber Jaromír finds a coat adorned with a coat of arms belonging to a prince from the land of the lion.
The next morning Milena brings Jaromir to her flock of sheep. The first task is to tend a flock of a thousand sheep. Jaromír keeps the sheep together until evening. But suddenly a black, curly-haired princess appears, exactly like Milena, and storms through the herd on a white horse. A sheep is frightened and runs into the rocks. Jaromír tries to stop the princess, he follows the sheep into the rocks and catches it - but then Jaromír sees glittering stones. He puts the sheep down, looks for diamonds, gets into a gorge and the rocks turn him to stone. Only Jaroslav's shining sword remains visible in the place of Jaromír's misfortune.
Prince Jaroslav discovers that his brother needs help. He makes his way to the diamond rocks. There Jaroslav also meets the curly black woman. He follows her and gets into the gorge, he too rushes to the aid of the sheep on the rock. He throws glittering stones aside, finds Jaromír's jacket and falls from the rock. When he regains consciousness, the beautiful Milena wakes him up. She was desperately looking for Jaromír and now says that she is overjoyed to have found him. The sheep is there too. Jaroslav completed the first task: all 1000 sheep are in the paddock. He collapses, exhausted from the fall.
Milena doesn't want to let Jaroslav alias Jaromír go away anymore. She nurses the sick person back to health and locks him up. Jaroslav is happy about Milena's love for his brother, but he must be careful not to betray himself as Jaroslav. From the beautiful Týna he receives the key and freedom for a kiss and he can now fulfill the second task: He successfully tends one hundred horses. Jaroslav gives Týna a rose - Milena is jealous and confused.
The third most dangerous task is still ahead: Jaroslav has to ride through the rocks with Princess Milena. When Milena and Jaroslav are at the start of the race, he identifies himself as Jaroslav and puts a Jaromír ring on Milena’s finger to distinguish her from her sister. They ride through the rocks, Jaroslav wins and the rocks have to give up what does not belong to them. Released, Jaromír steps out of the rock and falls into Milena’s arms and Jindrich and the enchanted twin sister are also free from the curse of the rocks.
At the end, two weddings are celebrated: Jaromír with Milena and Prince Jindrich with the twin sister of the rock princess. Jaroslav breaks up and looks for a bride himself.

The German dubbing of The Third Prince was made in the studios of DEFA Filmstudios , Babelsberg . The lonely fairytale castle of the enchanted princesses was shown at the location of Křivoklát Castle .
The diamond rocks are located in the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks (Adršpašsko-Teplice Rocks) in the Czech Republic.
The fairy tale film was shown in the cinemas of the ČSSR for the first time in 1982. The film had its cinema premiere in the GDR on December 16, 1983, after which it was premiered there on April 6, 1985 on GDR 1 . In Hungary the premiere was on April 12, 1984 and in the Federal Republic of Germany the first television broadcast followed on July 14, 1985 in cooperation with hr , NDR and WDR .
