The EHC Grindelwald is an ice hockey club from the town of Grindelwald in Switzerland , which has been playing in the 3rd Swiss amateur league since 2016 .

history

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, English guests played bandy in Grindelwald , which gradually became very popular with the local population. Out of this development, an ice hockey club was founded in 1928, which initially only played friendly games. Since ice sports came to a standstill during the Second World War , it was not until January 10, 1946 that the club was re-established. Thus, the team appeared for the first time in the winter of 1947/48 in a championship game. This became possible because SC Bern withdrew its fifth team from the Serie B championship in favor of the EHCG.

In the 1949/50 season, the team made it to Serie A and was already group champions in this division in the 1950/51 season. A year later, the club became Swiss champions in Serie A and in the 1952/53 season, the Grindelwald team rose to the National League B for the first time , in which they played until 1960.

On September 9, 1960, an extraordinary general assembly decided on voluntary relegation to the first division because the club had financial problems and the team was not allowed to continue playing on an artificial ice rink . Numerous postponements and canceled training sessions due to the weather reinforced this step. In 1970 the Swiss Ice Hockey Association decided that teams without an artificial ice rink would no longer be allowed in the first division. As a result, there was another voluntary relegation to the lower division. Not until 1973/74 were the first plans to build an artificial ice stadium, which was finally inaugurated on December 13, 1975 with a championship game. The team finished undefeated the championship rose again to the first division.

For the 1980/81 season, the athletic qualification was made in the NLB, in which the EHCG was able to hold the class until 1983, before the renewed course in the first division had to be started. In the winter of 1985/86 Grindelwald reached third place in the promotion round and was able to move up at the " green table " because the EHC Arosa voluntarily relegated to the first division. However, at the end of the following season, there was renewed relegation, as a result of which the club played in the third highest division until 1994 and then even relegated to the second division.

At the end of the 2009/10 season the team was relegated, but since another team withdrew, the EHC Grindelwald remained in the 2nd division. In the following 2010/11 season, the team reached the playoffs. On May 23, 2012, the EHC Grindelwald announced that it would voluntarily withdraw from the 2nd to the 4th division for financial and sporting reasons.

Already in the following season he was promoted to the 3rd division. This was followed by relegation to the 4th division. In the 2015/16 season, EHC Grindelwald again finished first in the group.

At the beginning of 2016, the club rose again to the 3rd division.
