history

The Publishing Fund of the Czech National Museum was established in 1831, it created a Board of Trustees for the Education of the Czech Language and Literature. This board of trustees also administered the Matice money fund.

The founders, exclusively Czech patriots, wanted to promote the importance of the Czech language and literature. Until 1841 the fund was called the treasury for the publication of Czech books . In the beginning, mainly works of Czech literature from the years 1834 to 1839 were funded from their funds. These included, for example, the Jungmannův Slovník (Jungmann's Czech-German dictionary) or Slovanské starožitnosti by Šafařík . The museum magazine Časopis Národního muzea , which is still published today, has been published since 1832 with funding from the fund .

As further works, they published the edition staročeská bibliotéka (Old Czech Library), novočeská bibliotéka ( New German- Czech Library), bibliotéka klasiků (Library of Classics) and domácí bibliotéka (House Library). This included writings by Viktorin Kornel ze Všehrd , J. Jan Amos Komenský , Josef Jungmann , Jan Svatopluk Presl , František Ladislav Čelakovský , Václav Vladivoj Tomek and 37 plays by Shakespeare in Czech.

Since 1866 the society was independent of the museum. With the appearance of other Czech publishers, especially after 1848, the importance of Matice česká decreased. In the one hundred years of its existence, the fund published 194 titles from all scientific fields.

In 1949 the company was dissolved. In 1952 the publishing of books was banned and the fund was threatened with complete liquidation. The rescue came from the Friends of the Czech Museum, who repeatedly gave literary lectures to the members on behalf of the Matice českál. In 1990, when the Society of the National Museum was renewed, Matice was re-established as one of the sections.

Today the fund fulfills traditional academic work in the fields of art history, literary studies and librarianship. The company organizes lectures and cultural events. A proclamation organ Zpravodaj Matice české with its supplement Matiční listy is also published . The company cooperates with other cultural institutions such as Matice slezská in Opava and Matice Moravská in Brno .
