Karel Tieftrunk (born October 30, 1829 in Weißwasser , † December 2, 1897 in Kutná Hora ) was a Czech author. He was a high school teacher by profession. He was also actively involved in Czech cultural organizations, authored textbooks and specialist publications in the field of linguistics and history.

Life

Education and professional career

He attended high school in Leitmeritz . In 1847 he moved to Prague to study linguistics, geography and history. In 1852 he took up a teaching position at the academic grammar school, but soon returned to Leitmeritz, where he initially worked as a substitute and then as a full-time teacher. From 1854 he gave lectures on Czech literature at the request of students after regular classes . This activity aroused the interest of the authorities. The principal of the school was given strict instructions to supervise these lectures, but no ban was imposed. From 1859 to 1882 he worked as a professor at the German high school in Prague and then until retirement as the director of the Czech high school on Žitná Street.

other activities

In his free time he was involved in the activities of Czech cultural associations. In the years 1864 to 1865 he explored the historical archives in the area around Jungbunzlau . In 1867 he was appointed extraordinary member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Teaching and four years later of the inner circle of Matice česká . In this organization he worked in the commission for the drafting of the “ Brus jazyka českého - polish of the Czech language ” (it was about the codification of the Czech language), which appeared in 1877 with an extensive introduction written by Deeprunk.

Deep drink was also a member of the "Historical Society", of which he was elected chairman, as well as managing director of the Society "Museum of the Kingdom of Bohemia" ( Společnost Musea království českého ) member of the board of directors of the "Svatobor" association (this was in 1862 from František Palacký for Promotion of Czech-speaking writers) and first secretary of the third grade of the Bohemian Academy. In 1897 he gave up all these activities due to his noticeably deteriorating state of health and sought relaxation in the seclusion of Kuttenberg, where he died a few months later.

Author activity

Tieftrunk's writing was extensive. From 1857 he mainly published historical studies in journals such as Památky archeologické , Právník , Osvěta , Zprávy královské společnosti , Časopis Musea království českého . He worked on a new edition of Czech History - History česká by Pavel Skála ze Zhoře and wrote the books “ Odpor stavův českých proti Ferdinandovi I. l. 1547 ”,“ Historie literatury české ”and“ Dějiny Matice České ”. The latter was published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the institution in 1881 and Deeprunk gave a supplementary lecture. He also published a two-part Czech reader for German secondary schools.

Because of his broad education and his friendly demeanor, deep drink was valued by authors and educators for its scientific depth and linguistic fine-tuning. They considered him one of the most outstanding researchers and authors. At the same time, they appreciated his attempts to arouse national awareness among the Czech pupils who had been enrolled in German schools by their parents.
