Bělá pod Bezdězem ( German white water ) is a town in the Okres Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic . In the city live in five suburbs 4876 inhabitants (2005).
history
The town of Bělá pod Bezdězem was created when the town charter was transferred to the old town of Bezděz , which was located at the foot of the Bezděz Mountain, but was destroyed by drought and fire.
In 1337 the city was fortified. Hynek Berka von Dubá and Lipá confirmed the town charter and at the same time renamed it Nový Bezděz (New Castle Bösig). After the Augustinian monastery was founded, the city also became a cultural center in which more and more craftsmen and merchants settled, especially under the rule of Wenceslas II . Shortly afterwards the crown sold the town to the lords of Michalovice. During the Hussite Wars, the city was conquered twice and held by representatives of Emperor Sigismund and the Prague opposition.
After the family died out, the town came to Ctibor Tovačovský of Cimburk in 1468 , then to the lords of Janovic. The Berka von Dubá followed and in 1622 Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Waldstein bought the confiscated lands. After his murder, the property came to the Margrave Caretto-Millesimo, from whom Count Ernst von Waldstein acquired it in 1678 . The Waldstein held the city until 1848. During the Thirty Years War, the city suffered from constant invasions by the Swedes and from the plague . The city flourished again in the 18th century. Textile factories settled here, a paper mill was opened and craftsmen settled down. From 1938 to 1945 the city belonged to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia .
