The Jabkenicko Nature Park , a forest with numerous small ponds and an extensive game reserve, forms a large part of the municipality . The landscape in a north-westerly direction up to Jizera is flat and is mainly used for agriculture. Neighboring towns in the northwest are Smilovice , Luštěnice , Kosořice and Pěčice .

history

The area around Jabkenice has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The oldest archaeological finds are dated to the 5th century BC. Dated and attributed to the early La Tène period .

In the 14th century Jabkenice was a parish village. The first written record comes from 1352, the first known owner was Beneš z Dìvína. In 1554 Anna von Wartenberg bought the property and transferred the place to her husband Heinrich von Waldstein . The last owner of the Waldstein family from 1735 was Maria Anna, wife of Josef von Fürstenberg , who emerged from the relentless persecution of the Bohemian brothers . Most of the inhabitants of Jabkenice belonged to this evangelical tendency, which had been forbidden since the Thirty Years War. In 1808 ownership fell to the Thurn und Taxis family .

Jabkenice became famous for its forester's house, in which Bedřich Smetana lived from 1875 until his death in 1884. He created his last three operas here ( The Kiss , The Secret and The Devil's Wall ) and finished the cycle My Fatherland . A Smetana Museum is housed in the forester's house, and an annual music festival in honor of the composer has been held since 1924.

Attractions

  • The forester's lodge is a branch of the Bedřich Smetana Museum in Prague. The museum, which opened in 1928, was closed in 1987 due to dilapidation, restored and reopened in 2003 with a permanent exhibition.
  • The game reserve, established in 1804, covers 530 hectares. It is open to the public outside the closed seasons.
  • The Smetana monument by František Bílek, created in 1924, stands next to the forester's house . The landscape had inspired him to write a section of My Fatherland .
