The Devil's Wall ( Czech. Čertova stěna ) is an opera in 3 acts by Bedřich Smetana , the libretto was written by Eliška Krásnohorská . The premiere took place on October 29, 1882 in the Prague Interim Theater.

action

Peter Vok wants to become a monk out of unhappy love, his servant Jarek wants to accompany him and therefore has to say goodbye to his beloved Katuška. But Vok's plans are thwarted: he falls in love with Hedvika. Now the devil Rarach appears in the person of the hermit Beneš, the devil encourages Vok to go to the monastery. After the people press him, Vok is inclined to marry, but only if a woman who loves him comes to the monastery to fetch him. To prevent this and to destroy the monastery with Vok, the devil builds a wall in the Vltava . But Jarek and Hedvika can overcome them, since they sacrifice themselves for Vok, and the piece turns out well.
