Parish Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Kněžmost

Kněžmost (German: Fürstenbruck , also Fürstinbruck ) is a municipality on the southern edge of the Bohemian Paradise in Okres Mladá Boleslav , Czech Republic . In addition to the former market town known as Kněžmost, 14 surrounding villages belong to it.

geography

Kněžmost is located on road 268, about 6 kilometers from Mnichovo Hradiště and 10 kilometers from Sobotka . North of the road begins the wooded reserve of the Bohemian Paradise. The settlements are spread across the open landscape in the valley of the Kněžmostka brook, which flows into the Jizera in Bakov, 6 kilometers away .

history

The Kněžmost settlement was built on a customs bridge on which an old trade route from Mělník to Jičín crossed the swampy valley of the Kněžmostka brook. The customs post was first mentioned in 1316. The oldest written testimony about the place itself dates from 1380. In that year Ctibor Valečovský bought part of the manor from Valečov. As early as 1408 Kněžmost was referred to as a town. Vaněk von Valečov did not actually get the town charter until the middle of the 15th century. The Valečov Castle , which served as the family seat of the Lords of Valečov, was also built not far from the village . At times the gender also had the addition of "von Kněžmost".

In 1468 the city burned down completely during an incursion by the Hussite armies, but was rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1481 the lords of Valečov sold the manor. The owners changed quickly during the following decades and the area was divided several times. In 1654 it became part of the Waldstein rulership , to which it then belonged for centuries.

Today Kněžmost is a local center for the 14 incorporated settlements. The main source of income is tourism. Some suppliers for the Škoda plant in nearby Mladá Boleslav have also settled in the municipality . Škoda operates a small test track in the village of Úhelnice.
