Rakiura track

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rakiura Track is a 29 km long hiking trail on Stewart Island in New Zealand . He's one of the great walks . The path follows much of the coast, passing small inlets, large bays and mud flats. Then it crosses steep hills covered with bush in its central part.

The trail is located in Rakiura National Park and can be completed in between one and three days. On the path there are two huts with 24 beds each at Port William and on the north arm of Paterson Inlet , where many hikers spend the night.

Large parts of the path are designed as boardwalks, on which wire mesh is attached as anti-slip protection. In a few places these boardwalks are missing , there the path often sinks into the mud due to the large amount of rain on Stewart Island.

Overall, the path is in good condition and has an easy to medium level of difficulty. The stated length of 29 km does not include the several kilometers of paved road at the beginning and end of the track at Half Moon Bay .

The two shelters are also equipped with firewood. This is often flown in by helicopter, as there are no roads and visitors are not supposed to cut trees themselves.
