Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is a 43-kilometer hiking trail that runs along the south and west shores of Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera National Park on the North Island of New Zealand .

The trail , officially classified as the New Zealand Great Walk , allows more views of the lake as it travels through various types of forests and open meadow areas. The path runs partly over private land and touches the Kiwi sanctuary on the Puketukutuku peninsula.

The starting points of the 3-4 day hike are Onepoto at the south and Hopuruahine at the north end of the lake.

Practical advice

The nearest town is Wairoa 60 km southeast. From there, shuttle buses run to the lake if required. Since it is not a circular route, transport by local bus or boat companies is required. All cabins and campsites except for Panekiri Hut on Panekiri Bluff can be reached by boat.

Both endpoints of the trail are on SH 38 , which offers access to the lake with its own boats. Near the Aniwaniwa visitor center, there is a parking space for motorhomes at Home Bay on Whanganui o parua .
