The Okres Hradec Králové ( German district Königgrätz ) is a district in Královéhradecký kraj in the Czech Republic. The district town is Hradec Králové .
Okres Hradec Králové is located in the middle of Eastern Bohemia . In the north it shares borders with Okres Jičín , Trutnov and Náchod , in the east with Okres Rychnov nad Kněžnou , in the south with Okres Pardubice ( Pardubice region ) and in the west with the Central Bohemian Region and its districts Okres Nymburk and Okres Kolín . The area is around 892 km². This makes it the third smallest district in the region, but the largest in terms of population with around 163,671 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). (approx. 30% population of the region). The population density is 180 inhabitants / km². The district consists of slight hills with about 132 to 334 m above sea level. The climate is pleasant, the south warmer and drier, the north slightly humid.
water
The most important rivers are the Upper Elbe with the tributaries of the Orlice , Cidlina and Trotina . Mlýnský, Lužický and Piletický brooks are also important for irrigation. The water area takes up about 2% of the total area.
ground
71.2% of the land is used for agriculture, 16% is mostly forested with deciduous trees (lowest forest area in the district).
Industry
It is an industrial region with intensive agricultural use. Industry is mainly located in the district town and the districts of Novobydžovsko, Chlumecko and Třebechovicko. The focus is on mechanical engineering and metal processing . Around a quarter of employees work in these sectors.
Agriculture
Agriculture is an important industry . 2/3 of the companies have now been privatized, a quarter is operated as a cooperative . 739 companies cultivate 58,000 hectares of land. The focus is on plant and grain cultivation. Pig breeding dominates cattle breeding.

Around a third of all companies in the district are located in the district. At the end of 2001 there were 21,000. Most of them are traders (69.3%), followed by limited liability companies (9.2%). 14% of the companies are industrial companies, around one tenth are construction companies and 5.5% are agricultural companies.
Employees
Around a quarter of the workforce are employed in industry, 13% in trade, around a third in construction and 5% in agriculture. Around a fifth are employed in public administration.

The district has a high concentration of population in cities with more than 5,000 inhabitants. 72% of the population live in four cities.
history
The historical tradition is strongly influenced by the royal city of Königgrätz , which was first mentioned in 1073. There are many cultural and historical monuments to be found here, including:
- The center of Hradec Králové with the Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, the White Tower, the Chapel of St. Climent, the Baroque town hall and a large number of historical buildings.
- the Gothic castle Hrádek near Nechanice ,
- the baroque castle Karlova Koruna in Chlumec nad Cidlinou
- newly restored chapel of the Apparition of the Virgin in Smiřice
On January 1, 2007, the communities Jílovice , Ledce and Vysoký Újezd from the Okres Rychnov nad Kněžnou were added.
