The region shares borders with the Central Bohemian Region , the Hradec Králové , Olomouc , South Moravia and Vysočina regions . In the northeast it borders on Poland ( County Glatz ). The natural border forms part of the Eagle Mountains and the westernmost part of the Jeseníky Mountains . The hills of the Žďárské vrchy ( Saar Mountains ) and Železné hory ( Iron Mountains ) rise in the south and southeast . The fertile plain of the Elbe valley occupies the middle of the area . The Eagle Mountains, Žďárské vrchy and Železné hory are among the nature reserves of the region. The region is blessed with large reservoirs of both surface and groundwater. The water pollution, especially the Elbe and the Zwitta, is an exception. The Sečská přehrada reservoir near Chrudim , the Bohdanečský rybník ponds on the Opatovický Canal and Pastvina on the Wild Eagle are among the largest water bodies . Part of the region is a water protection area. The main reservoir of the groundwater is mainly in the Bohemian chalk pan in the Okres Ústí nad Orlicí and Zwittau and in the sediments of the Elbe near Pardubice.
