The Chvaletice power plant (in Czech Elektrárna Chvaletice , abbreviation ECH ) is a coal -fired power plant near Chvaletice on the Elbe in Eastern Bohemia , Czech Republic, which is fired with lignite from the opencast mine near Most . The plant's chimney is 305 m high and is the tallest free-standing structure in the Czech Republic.

history

The plant was from 1973 to 1979 on the site of a manganese - roasting built. The first of the four blocks was started at the end of 1977, the last at the end of 1978.

Initially, the coal was transported to Lovosice by rail and then brought to Chvaletice by ship. In 1996, the transport of the fuel was completely switched to rail.

In 1998 the flue gas desulphurization system was put into operation.

Since September 2013 the power plant has belonged to the Severní energetická company (which was still called Litvínovská uhelná until August 2013 ). The factory was taken over from the previous owner ČEZ for 150 million euros . ČEZ was accused by the European Commission of dominating the Czech energy market and therefore asked to sell at least one power plant with an output of 800 MW. The company originally planned to close the plant in 2015.

investment

The power plant comprises four blocks with an output of 200 MW each and has a 305 m high chimney. The cooling towers are 100 m high and have a diameter of 60 m at the base. The plant is connected to the Týnec and Labem substations with two 400 kV high-voltage lines .

The power plant is equipped with a flue gas desulphurisation system, which desulphurizes the gases by washing lime and then discharges them through the cooling towers.

The coal delivered by rail is unloaded using a rotary tipper. There is a coal storage area for 850,000 t.

Fuel transport

Because of the construction of the power station, the upper reaches of the Elbe was made navigable. Ship transport was chosen because the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) made unrealistic demands in the event that they had to take over the transport of coal from Northern Bohemia to the power station. So she insisted that between the coal mines near Most and the Řečany railway station additional tracks of 200 km in length should be laid and that several stations should be expanded.

The Elbe was made navigable from Kolín especially for coal transports . Because the locks between Mělník and Chvaletice only 85 are m long, the extra short were pushers TR 500 with push barge developed TC 1000th To operate the ships, the Czech Elbe-Oder Shipping Company (ČSPLO) founded a subsidiary for the transport of energy coal (ZPEU), which owned 64 push boats and 80 coal lighters. For the power plant, 18 to 20 ships of coal had to be delivered every day, which represents an annual transport of up to 4 million tons of coal.

At the beginning of 1979 a cold winter let the Elbe freeze over and prevented shipping. In an emergency, the coal had to be taken by train to the Opatovice power station and from there by truck to Chvaletice. Even the icebreaker Anhalt , who came from the GDR , could not change the situation, because he got stuck in the 60 cm thick ice near Čelákovice and had to wait until the thaw set in on February 6th.

In 1992 coal was transported by rail and in 1996 shipping was completely discontinued.
