The end of the wagon with the rotatable coupling is specially marked so that it is easy for the railway staff to see whether the wagons are correctly coupled for unloading without disconnecting the train. So that the function can be used, a marked end must always be coupled with an unmarked end.

Tandem rotary tippers can unload two rail cars at the same time. With such a system it is possible to unload 6000 tons of coal an hour.
