City structure
In addition to Groß-Bieberau, there is the Rodau district and the Hippelsbach settlement in the district of Groß-Bieberau.
history
Probably due to the high fertility of the loess soils and the extremely plentiful supply of water, the area around Groß-Bieberau was already settled by arable farmers in the early Stone Age. This is proven by the numerous ceramic and jewelry finds from this time.
The place was first mentioned in a document in 787, and the town charter was granted half a millennium later, in 1312. Groß-Bieberau was owned by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen from 1312 to 1479 and fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1479 the line of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen was extinct. Groß-Bieberau was in the judicial district of the district of Oberramstadt . The centering was divided into so-called "rice car," each of which a top magistrate board that the Zentgrafen were subordinated. This district had to provide a freight wagon ( rice wagon ) including draft animals and servants for campaigns. Groß-Bieberau belonged to the "Großbieberauer Reiswagen", which also included Waldhausen consisting of the places Niedernhausen , Billings , Meßbach and Nonrod as well as the villages Rodau , Wersau , and Neurod and Steinau . The entire district of Oberramstadt was assigned to the Lichtenberg office . This classification existed until the beginning of the 19th century.
In the historical documents, the place is documented under the following place names (the year it was mentioned in brackets): Biberahe, Biberae villa (1267); Bibera (1312); Biberauwe (1326); Bybera (1345); Beberaw, Bieberaw (1422); Büberauw, Büberauwe, Grossenbibra (1514); Great Bieberaw (1671).
The Thirty Years War, which only twelve residents survived, meant a severe setback for the city. The Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt then became part of the Grand Duchy of Hessen in 1806 .
The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Groß-Bieberau in 1829:
"Großbieberau (L. Bez. Reinheim) Lutheran parish village; is 3 ⁄ 4 hours from Reinheim on the Fischbach, which reaches the Gersprenz not far from here, as well as on the road from Darmstadt through the Odenwald. The place consists of 194 houses and 1408 inhabitants, which reform up to 10. 6 Cath. And 50 Jews are all Lutheran. There is a church, built in 1726, except for the tower, a rectory, a chaplain’s apartment, a town hall built in 1800 with which the school is connected, 2 grinding mills and 1 brickworks. 4 grocer's markets are held annually. - In 1312 King Heinrich VII granted Count Diether IV von Katzenellenbogen the freedom of the city of Oppenheim, as well as market rights, for Großbieberau, as well as for Lichtenberg, and in 1326 Lichtenberg and Großbieberau became the Wittwensitz of Countess Catharine through an arbitration decision , Diether IV left wife, confirmed. The village was a fiefdom of the Palatinate, with which Count Eberhard von Katzenellenbogen was enfeoffed by Count Palatine Ruprecht in 1398. In 1422 Großbieberau was sacked and burned by Schenk Conrad von Erbach, Johann von Cronberg and Hans Kämmerer von Dalberg. The place suffered a lot during the 30 Years War. The Palatinate teachings lasted up to the most recent times. "
