Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther
Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther (born December 25, 1812 in Darmstadt , † May 26, 1887 in Darmstadt ) was a German historian and librarian .
Life
Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther was born in Darmstadt in 1812 as the son of the museum inspector Wilhelm Walther and his wife Helene Stritter. He attended the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in his hometown and then studied theology at the University of Giessen . During his studies in 1830 he became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Germania . In 1833 he became tutor to an English family, whom he also accompanied on trips through Europe.
He renounced a pastor's position and took up a position as an assistant at the court library in Darmstadt in 1835. There he became secretary in 1836 and finally librarian in 1850 .
After the death of Johann Wilhelm Mitzenius (1800–1873), he succeeded him as director of the court library in February 1873. He held this office until his retirement in October 1885.
In 1841 he was appointed Dr . phil. PhD.
From 1840, Walther had been the director of the Kabinetsmuseum and the Kabinetsbibliothek, which he founded at that time. Walther concentrated primarily on the area of Hessian history. For this he wrote numerous writings.
Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther died in Darmstadt in May 1887. Since 1839 he was with Johanna Jacobea Auguste geb. Küchler (1821–1871) married. The marriage resulted in three daughters and one son.

- 1858: Awarded the Gold Medal of Merit for Science, Art, Industry and Agriculture
- 1864: Permission to accept and wear the Russian Order of St. Anne III. class
- 1873: appointed privy councilor
- 1876: Permission to accept and wear the Knight's Cross 2nd class of the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus
- 1877: Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Ludewig
- 1885: Commander's Cross II. Class of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous.
