Life

Johann Wilhelm Mitzenius studied theology. During his studies in 1817 he became a member of the Ehrenspiegelburschenschaft . After completing his studies, he took up a position as an assistant at the court library in Darmstadt. At that time the court library was managed by Andreas Schleiermacher and systematically built up and expanded. In 1827 he became secretary and finally librarian at the court library. After the death of Karl August Ludwig Feder in 1856, he succeeded him as director of the court library. He held this office until his death in 1873.

The holdings of the court library around 1865 were approx. 377,000 volumes, 74,000 dissertations, 3,000 manuscripts and 12,000 maps. In 1871 the Grand Ducal Military Library was integrated into the court library. With the establishment of the library of the TH Darmstadt in 1872, a division of labor between the two libraries in procurement policy occurred. From then on, the court library held back from acquiring technical and scientific literature and concentrated on the remaining subject areas.

Johann Wilhelm Mitzenius died in Darmstadt in February 1873. He had been married since 1828. The theologian Adolf Mitzenius (1831–1889), the poet Karoline Mitzenius (1835–1897) and the educator Julie Mitzenius (1840–1909) emerged from this marriage.
