Karl August Ludwig Feder

Karl August Ludwig Feder (* 1790 in Göttingen ; † January 9, 1856 in Darmstadt ) was a German philologist and librarian.

Life

Feder was the son of the Göttingen professor of philosophy Johann Georg Heinrich Feder and was already enrolled as a child at the University of Göttingen in 1797 . In 1807, as a student, he became a member of the Hanoverian Landsmannschaft and on January 18, 1809 a co-founder of the Corps Hannovera . After completing his studies in the autumn of 1809, he traveled through Italy, France, Spain and England in the style of a grand tour . In 1818 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg to the Dr. phil. and took up a position as a private lecturer there in 1819.

He became a teacher and educator for Prince Ludwig III. and Karl von Hessen-Darmstadt , who lived temporarily in Lausanne with their mother Wilhelmine Luise von Baden . In 1820 he received the title of professor and councilor. With the accession of Grand Duke Ludwig III. In 1830 he succeeded Andreas Schleiermacher as director of the court library in Darmstadt, from which today's University and State Library in Darmstadt emerged . He held this position until the end of his life and was honored for his administration by the Grand Duke together with his brother Prince Karl after his death with a commemorative plaque on the tomb.
