Adolf Morneweg (born August 14, 1851 in Groß-Bieberau ; † June 9, 1909 in Darmstadt ) was a German lawyer and local politician who was mayor or lord mayor of Darmstadt from 1891 to 1909 .

Life

Adolf Morneweg was the son of the forest inspector Ernst Morneweg (1821-1905) and his wife Wilhelmine (Minna) Morneweg nee Koch. He graduated from high school in Darmstadt in 1869 and studied law . After completing his legal traineeship , he worked as follows: 1878 district office assessor in Schotten , 1881 district official in Bensheim , 1889 police advisor at the police office in Darmstadt. In 1891 he was elected mayor of Darmstadt to succeed Albrecht Ohly . He held this office until his death in 1909. Since 1892 he has held the title of Lord Mayor .

During his tenure, the city of Darmstadt grew dynamically. The population rose from around 56,000 (1890) to over 87,000 (1910). Morneweg continued the course of its predecessor and initiated numerous infrastructure measures , the existing infrastructure (gas, electricity and water supply) was significantly expanded. The Stadtbad , construction of which began in 1905, was particularly popular . However, Morneweg did not live to see the opening in 1909.

Likewise, numerous companies, especially in the field of mechanical engineering, were settled or relocated within Darmstadt so that expansion was only possible (e.g. Merck ). During this time, numerous new residential areas were built (e.g. the Paulusviertel ), and eight new school buildings were erected. The Technical University of Darmstadt was moved from its previous location on Kapellplatz to Hochschulstrasse in 1895 and significantly expanded. The city contributed considerable financial resources to the new buildings of the technical university, provided that it did not have to make any further contributions in the future.

From 1900 to 1902 Morneweg was (nationally liberal) an elected member of the second chamber in the Hessian state parliament for the constituency of the city of Darmstadt . From December 1905 he was appointed by the Grand Duke as a member of the First Chamber of Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse for life.

On October 27, 1883, Adolf Morneweg married Mathilde Hallwachs (1861–1940) in Bensheim. Morneweg died in June 1909 after a long illness. His grave is in the old cemetery (grave site: III J 106).
