Bensheim ([ ˈbɛnshaɪ̯m ]; in the local dialect Bensem ) is a town in the Bergstrasse district in southern Hesse . Bensheim is located on Bergstrasse and with more than 40,000 inhabitants is the largest city in the district.

Geographical location
The city is located on the eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Plain on the slopes of the western Odenwald on the Bergstrasse . The next larger cities are Darmstadt (about 22 km north), Heidelberg (about 35 km south), Worms (about 18 km west) and Mannheim (about 32 km south-west). The district town of Heppenheim is about 5 km south.
By Bensheim from the flowing Lauter coming from the east Lauter , which from Rinnentor Winkelbach is. South of the city which also flows from the Odenwald (Meerbachtal with cell and Gronau) coming Meerbach . The urban area of Bensheim is divided into eleven districts, for each of which a local district with a local advisory board and mayor has been set up, two of which are in the core city and nine for the municipalities incorporated into Bensheim and consists of ten districts. Bensheim is characterized - like the other places on the Bergstrasse - by a particularly mild and sunny climate with around 2000 hours of sunshine annually and the earliest start of spring in Germany. Protected by the Odenwald, kiwis, almonds, figs and peaches thrive here in the mild climate. The Bergstrasse is therefore often referred to as “ Germany's Riviera ”.
The city of Bensheim promotes the cultivation of almond trees, for example, in the front gardens of the residents. Every year there is a flower queen in Bensheim. It has been provided annually by the Bensheim Automobile Club since 1948 and has been the flagship of the city of Bensheim at home and abroad for decades.

The coat of arms shows in red a knight with a golden lance held with two hands (" Contus ") and in golden armor on a silver horse. Below in the base of the shield sits a green dragon that is pierced by the lance.
The red background refers to the coat of arms of Mainz , as the city was owned by the diocese of Mainz until 1802 . The rider killing the dragon represents Saint George , who was considered the patron saint of the city of Bensheim in earlier times .

- The market square has always been the center of the city of Bensheim. It is located almost 100 meters west of St. George's Church. There are a number of half-timbered houses around the market square .

Protected areas
There are five FFH areas in the Bensheim district : "Clay pit area of Bensheim and Heppenheim", "Lean lawns of Gronau and adjacent areas", "Kniebrecht, Melibocus and Orbishöhe near Seeheim-Jugenheim, Alsbach and Zwingenberg", "Beech forests of the front Odenwald" and parts of the "Jägersburger / Gernsheimer Wald". The Jägersburger / Gernsheimer Wald is also designated as a bird sanctuary , as is the " Hessian Altneckarschlingen ". The nature reserve category includes the areas “Hemsberg von Bensheim-Zell”, “ Erlache bei Bensheim ” and “ Orbishöhe von Auerbach and Zwingenberg ”. The "Forehahi" conservation area refers to the forest in the west of the district, while the Bergstrasse-Odenwald nature park encompasses the entire district.

Youth culture
Bensheim offers a variety of activities for children. For example, a new youth center was opened on January 26, 2006 , which offers children up to 14 years of age ample opportunities to be busy. The old, larger youth center on Wilhelmstrasse was closed for this. There are relatively few offers for young people, especially for the subcultural currents such as skaters, bikers or the young music scene. However, on August 30th, 2008 a new BMX / Skatepark was inaugurated, where skaters and BMXers now meet regularly. The park was requested and planned by the young people themselves.

- MaiWay: The MaiWay Festival has been held annually since 2003. The unique music spectacle in Bensheim always starts on the night of Ascension Day. Numerous restaurants and larger halls offer the platform for over 30 live bands in one evening. A red line on the sidewalks running through the city links the entire event and shows the way to the individual events.
- Citizens 'festival: The citizens' festival, introduced on the occasion of the inauguration of the pedestrian zone in 1975, has been celebrated regularly in early summer since 1977.
- Auerbacher Bachgasse Festival: The Auerbach Bachgasse Festival has been held in July since 1987.

Bensheim is the seat of the Bensheim District Court . As a lay judge, it is also for the districts of Lampertheim and Fürth / Odw. responsible. The probation service of the Darmstadt Regional Court has a branch in Bensheim.

Bensheim is at the intersection of federal highways 3 and 47 . The A5 runs to the west of the city . Bensheim can be reached via two exits: in the north via the Zwingenberg exit and in the south via the Bensheim exit. A few kilometers to the west, the A 67 runs parallel to the A 5 . Bensheim can be reached here via the Lorsch junction .
Listed on the Main-Neckar-Bahn Frankfurt - Heidelberg lying Bahnhof Bensheim is InterCity -Systemhalt. The station is also the end of the Nibelungen Railway, which runs from Worms to Bensheim . The district of Auerbach has its own train station on the Frankfurt am Main - Heidelberg line . However, only regional trains stop at it .
Local and regional public transport is served by two city bus routes (671 and 673) and eight regional bus routes (640, 641, 646, 665, 669, 675, 676, 677). Call taxis operate outside of the bus times, mainly in town and to the city districts, which must be booked in advance one hour before the scheduled departure if you wish to travel, and can only be used free of charge by season ticket users of the Rhein-Neckar transport association . As part of the re-tendering of the Bensheim line bundle, there were some adjustments to the bus and taxi lines.
The Frankfurt airport is located about 50 kilometers by road north of Bensheim. The Bensheim glider airfield is reserved for gliders, motor gliders or smaller powered aircraft.

Bensheim is a city of schools. There are six high schools here alone : the Alte Kurfürstliche Gymnasium , the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule (cooperative comprehensive school with gymnasial upper level), the Goethe-Gymnasium (high school from grade 5 with gymnasial upper level), the Liebfrauenschule (private Catholic girls' high school ), the Karl-Kübel-Schule as a vocational high school (with the subjects: business, bilingual economics , health, mechatronics , environment, data processing, design and media technology) and the Heinrich-Metzendorf-Schule as a vocational high school (with the subjects mechatronics and environment) .
In Bensheim there is a commercial and a commercial district vocational school, which before January 1, 1963 together formed the district vocational school, formerly a training school. The commercial district vocational school, the Karl-Kübel-Schule, offers a vocational school with a foreign language secretariat and a commercial college in addition to the technical college and the vocational school . The commercial district vocational school, the Heinrich-Metzendorf-Schule, expands the educational offer with a vocational school in the commercial-technical area, a vocational school, a technical school and a technical college.
There are seven public primary schools in the city . These are the Hemsberg School, the Elementary School in the Kappesgärten, the Joseph Heckler School, the Schloßberg School, the Kirchberg School, the Märkerwald School and the Carl Orff School. In addition, there is the Schillerschule as a primary, secondary and secondary school as well as the Senfkornschule privately run.

The largest European ecumenical institute has been based in Bensheim since 1947 with the denominational institute of the Evangelical Federation . From 1947 to 1967 and since November 2007 it has been in the Wolfgang Sucker House.
