Thorsten Herrmann (born November 23, 1964 in Fulda ) is a CDU politician and was mayor of the Hessian city ​​of Bensheim an der Bergstrasse from 2002 to 2014 .

Career

After completing his military service, he began studying biology , education and sport in 1986 at the University of Cologne and the Cologne Sports University , which he completed in 1994 with the first state examination. He then worked as a research assistant at the Botanical Institute of Cologne University. A legal clerkship from 1995 to 1997 brought him the second state examination. From 1998 to 1999 Herrmann worked for Christian Schwarz-Schilling, member of the Bundestag . After that he worked as a speaker in the Hessian state parliament for cultural policy, science and art as well as for media policy until 2002 . On June 30, 2002, he was elected Mayor of Bensheim with 52.8% of the vote. On June 15, 2008, he was re-elected with 60.5% of the vote. At the beginning of November 2013, Herrmann announced that he would no longer run for the upcoming direct mayor election in 2014.

In November 2013 he was nominated as a candidate for the CDU for election to the district administrator of the Wetterau district . Herrmann lost the election, with 35.7 percent of the vote, against incumbent Joachim Arnold (SPD).

In December 2014, his mayor's office in Bensheim ended . His successor in office is Rolf Richter (CDU). Herrmann has been the Hessentag s representative for the State of Hesse since June 2015 .

Personal

Herrmann has been married to the chemical engineer Beatrice since 1993 .
