Hessentag
The Hessentag is an annual festival of the German state of Hesse to present different regions of Hesse . During a mostly ten-day week of events from Friday to the following Sunday, the country presents itself to visitors with a focus on cultural presentations and exhibitions. The Hessentag is the oldest and largest national festival in Germany .
Most recently, the Hessentag 2019 took place from June 7th to 16th, 2019 in Bad Hersfeld .
history
The Hessentage was launched in 1961 by the then Hessian Prime Minister Georg-August Zinn . The aim of the event was initially to bring long-time residents and immigrants together and to give the numerous refugees and displaced persons a feeling for their new home. But Hesse itself also had some catching up to do in terms of a sense of togetherness, as the state only emerged in 1945 through the decision of the victorious powers of World War II from areas that had more or less to do with one another for 400 years and had separate developments. Georg-August Zinn knew how to integrate the various German regional teams in Hesse and with the Hessians. True to Zinn's motto: "Hesse is whoever wants to be Hesse".
The focus was on the presentation of the customs , in particular the wide variety of costumes that exist in Hesse, as well as the costumes of the new citizens who came to Hesse after 1945. Since 1971 one Hessentag couple has been chosen to represent the Hessentag.
The duration of the Hessentage has changed since the beginning. Until 1971 it was only three days, since the 12th Hessentag in Marburg, nine days, and since the 30th Hessentag in Fulda it has always been ten days.
Hessentag today
The Hessentag has undergone many changes since the beginning. Today the Hessentag combines culture, customs and a modern lifestyle. Concerts by international pop groups are now just as much a part of the event program as the state exhibition. The state exhibition is housed in mobile exhibition halls, there you will find stands of the state government , the state parliament , the state parliament groups, various state authorities and organizations, associations and clubs. Regions also introduce themselves, mostly from a touristic point of view.
Every year over a million visitors come to the Hessentag - not only from Hesse. At the Hessentag in Baunatal in 1999, more than a million visitors were counted for the first time, the front runner so far is Kassel with 1,830,000 visitors at the Hessentag 2013 . Other Hessentage with more than a million visitors were Dietzenbach (2001), Butzbach (2007), Langenselbold (2009), Stadtallendorf (2010), Oberursel (2011) and Bensheim (2014). The Hessentag 2017 also attracted 1.4 million visitors. For 10 days Rüsselsheim was the center of Hesse.
For financial reasons Alsfeld gave up the organization of the 50th Hessentag 2010. It was therefore carried out in Stadtallendorf. The Hessentag 2013 was originally supposed to take place in Vellmar. However, the financial situation meant that the Hessentag had to be canceled. As an alternative, Kassel was selected, which, in addition to Hessentag, also celebrated its 1100th anniversary.
