Hessentag 1996

The Hessentag 1996 was the 36th Hessentag and took place with the slogan “In Gelnhausen the lion is loose” from June 28th to July 7th 1996 in the former imperial city of Gelnhausen .

The Hessentag was opened by Prime Minister Hans Eichel ( SPD ) and Mayor Jürgen Michaelis (CDU). The Hessentag couple formed Bettina Plaßmann and Jürgen Bohländer.

Around 500 events took place. The venues included the Hessen-Palace on Müllerwiese, the marquee at the Weiberswiesen, the large open-air stage on the airfield, a stage on Lohmühlenweg, the HR-Treff on the Bleiche and the wine village on Untermarkt. For ten days, the Obermarkt in the historic old town provided the backdrop for medieval market activity with all sorts of short breaks and spectacles. As part of the anniversary year of the State of Hesse, the special exhibition "50 Years of Hesse" was on view in a specially prepared shipping hall. Other exhibitions included “People See People”, “Hesse in Caricature” and an exhibition by the Augsburger Puppenkiste .

Performed artists included Zillertaler Schürzenjäger , Backstreet Boys , Caught in the Act , Culture Beat , Mr. President , Stefan Raab , Scooter , Masterboy, Fools Garden , Nina Hagen , Wolf Maahn , Smokie , The Rubettes , Suzi Quatro , Florian Silbereisen , Heino , Geschwister Hofmann and many others. The hr3 Clubnight took place with the DJs Mark Spoon, DJ Dag, Talla 2XLC and over 10,000 ravers. With the "Liverpool Oratorio" by Paul McCartney and Carl Davis, a highlight of classical music was on the program.

The literary contribution was also strengthened at the Hessentag in Gelnhausen. In addition to Gudrun Pausewang, the authors Wilhelm Genazino, Gabriele Wohmann and Peter Härtling read. For the first time, the last item on the program of each day of the event was concerts by candlelight in the former synagogue in Gelnhausen. Due to the great popularity, the concert series in Gelnhausen was regularly continued on the first Friday of each month for many years even after the Hessentag.

In total - despite the rainy weather - around 660,000 visitors were counted. The organization management was on the part of the state of Hesse Heinrich Kaletsch, on the part of the Barbarossa city Thomas Appl.
