The Backstreet Boys (BSB) are an American boy group . It was founded on April 20, 1993 in Orlando (Florida) by Lou Pearlman and is considered the most successful boy group in the world with more than 130 million records sold. The group was named after a flea market in Orlando, the "backstreet flea market".

Band history

In 1992, Howard Dwaine Dorough and Alexander James McLean met at a talent competition. Nickolas Gene Carter joined them a short time later. Kevin Scott Richardson was still working as a model and songwriter at the time. Kevin suggested his cousin Brian Thomas Littrell for the band, who was then singing in the church choir. Johnny Wright, a previous executive member of New Kids on the Block , was hired by Pearlman as their manager.

1995–1996: First single, first album

In the fall of 1995, the Backstreet Boys started their career with the single We've Got It Going On . In Germany the single reached gold status. Their second single I'll Never Break Your Heart even reached number 1 in Austria. The Backstreet Boys also received gold for this single. The debut album Backstreet Boys was released in the spring of 1996. It reached six-platinum status. Quit Playin 'Games with My Heart was their first number 1 single in Germany. This release from the debut album also reached platinum.

1997–1998: Second album, first success in the USA

In the summer of 1997 the second album was released with the title Backstreet's Back . The released single Everybody (Backstreet's Back) reached number 2 in Germany. The 1997 tour of Germany was sold out. The singles As Long As You Love Me and All I Have to Give were released from the same album in 1998 . With these titles they were also successful for the first time in their home country, the USA, and reached top chart positions. They then released an album in the US that contained songs from their first and second albums. This was followed by a tour of the USA and Europe at the end of the year. In 1998 they also had a musical appearance in the series Sabrina - Totally Verhext! .

1999–2000: Album No. 3 and 4

During the subsequent US tour, Europe became quiet about the Backstreet Boys. The tour was followed by the third studio album entitled Millennium . This album sold approximately 1,300,000 copies in the United States within a week of its release. The singles Larger Than Life , I Want It That Way , Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely and The One were released from the album .

At the end of 2000, the Backstreet Boys released their album Black & Blue . Single releases from it were The Call , Shape of My Heart and More Than That .

2001–2003: Greatest hits and band break

Their first best-of album entitled Greatest Hits - Chapter One was released in late 2001 and has sold over 7 million copies to date. In the same year, the alcohol and drug addiction of the band member AJ became known. The first rumors of separation emerged, but the band stayed together. However, it became quieter and no further records were released for the time being.

In the fall of 2002, the youngest member of the band, Nick Carter, started his solo career with the album Now or Never .

2004–2006: Comeback and last album as a group of five

The plans to restart the band began in 2004. The Backstreet Boys recorded the album Never Gone , which was released on June 13, 2005. The first single, Incomplete , hit stores on May 30, 2005. The second single, Just Want You to Know , was released on September 12, 2005. On October 11, 2005, Jive Records released the title Crawling Back to You as a download single under the motto "Music for Hurricane Relief" for the benefit of hurricane victims in the States. From October 5th to November 5th, 2005 the Backstreet Boys toured all over Germany. Due to the great demand, an additional show was offered in the Nuremberg arena as well as in the Cologne arena . After the release of the third European single I Still on November 25, 2005, which u. a. was very successful in Germany, rumors of separation emerged again, which were further fueled by the release of Brian Littrell's first solo album Welcome Home in 2006. On June 23, 2006, Kevin Richardson left the group after 13 years.

2007–2009: Album No. 6 and 7

The four remaining Backstreet Boys released after a year break on October 5, 2007, the first single as a quartet with the title Inconsolable . This was the first single from the sixth studio album Unbreakable . The second single was called Helpless When She Smiles and was released on January 11, 2008. The Unbreakable world tour started on February 16, 2008 in Tokyo and ended on May 22 in St. Petersburg (Russia), seven of the concerts took place in Germany .

In September 2009, the Backstreet Boys released the single Straight Through My Heart in Germany in advance of the album This Is Us . This will be followed by another tour through the USA and Europe at the end of the year.

2010–2011: NKOTBSB and Kevin's return

As part of the American Music Awards 2010, the Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block presented themselves as NKOTBSB for the first time with a choreographed show in which some of their respective hits were interwoven. On the occasion of the traditional New Year's Eve celebration, a second appearance followed in front of about a million people in New York's Times Square. With Don't turn out the lights , NKOTBSB released their first single together in December 2010. Under the title One night - One stage - Once in a lifetime , the two groups have been on tour together since June 2011, including guest performances in the historic Fenway Park in Boston. On April 28, 2012, during an NKOTBSB concert in London (which was broadcast in over 400 theaters) it was announced that Kevin Richardson was returning to the band and a new album was being planned.

2012–2016: Eighth album and film projects

On November 6, 2012, a new song by the Backstreet Boys was released. The song is called It's Christmas Time Again . The band's latest album, In A World Like This , was released on August 2, 2013 in Germany. The Germany tour with the original cast took place in March 2014. The summer concerts planned afterwards could not be implemented due to the bankruptcy of the concert organizer.

In 2013 the band made a cameo in the movie That's the End . Nick Carter produced the trash movie "Dead 7" in 2015. In the film he can be seen alongside other members of the band as sheriff and leading actor.

2017–2019: Las Vegas show and album # 9

At the beginning of March 2017, their permanent Las Vegas show, announced the year before, started. The show includes a total of 80 appearances until the end of April 2019. At the same time, work on their ninth studio album began.

On May 17, 2018, they released the first single Don't Go Breaking My Heart from their upcoming album. The second single Chances was released on November 9th, 2018. In addition, the song No Place was released as a single. The new album DNA was released on January 25, 2019 and went straight to number 2 in the German charts; in the USA, Austria and Switzerland even in first place.

Together with the American US- Electro-House - DJ and music producer Steve Aoki they took for his album "Neon Future IV" on the song "Let It Be Me" which was published on September 6 as a single.

Awards

In the summer of 1999, the Backstreet Boys broke the record for best-selling album in the first week of release. Their third album, Millennium , had sold 1.13 million copies a week after it was released. In total, the album was sold over 30 million times in a total of 43 countries around the world and reached platinum status in 28 countries.

You have been nominated five times for a Grammy , and a. Four times with the Billboard Music Award , three times with the World Music Award , five times with the MTV Europe Music Award and twice with the MTV Video Music Award .

Discography

In Germany alone, the Backstreet Boys have sold over seven million records to date (as of July 2019), making them one of the performers with the best-selling records in Germany.
