Jive Records is a British music label whose headquarters are now in New York . The label now belongs to Sony BMG .

history

Jive Records was founded in 1977 by Clive Calder on Willesden Street in London . The name is inspired by the Township Jive , a South African dance and music genre. The publications in the USA were carried out by Arista Records until 1987 , after which RCA Records took over . At the beginning of Jive Records, artists like Billy Ocean and Samantha Fox were under contract.

Without the influence of Aristas Clive Davis , who was against hip-hop music at the time, Jive had many controversial hip-hop artists under contract in the early 1980s, such as Too $ hort and Schoolly D. By the mid-1990s, Jive Records had developed into one of the big established labels with a focus on hip-hop and RnB . At that time, hip-hop artists such as Whodini , DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince , E-40 , A Tribe Called Quest , KRS-One and 2pac as well as RNB singers such as Aaliyah and R. Kelly were under contract . The music area was expanded towards house . Here Jive published some compilations and works by Liz Torres and Mr. Lee .

After the distribution contract with RCA expired in 1991, the Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) took over a small portion of the shares in Jive and became a new distribution partner for the USA.

Despite being heavily involved in hip-hop, Jive signed pop artists like the Backstreet Boys , * NSYNC and Britney Spears in the late 1990s . These three were the label's most commercially successful artists with over 100 million records sold.

Jive had its own independent management from 1991 to 2002. This changed when it was taken over by BMG in 2002. BMG paid a total of three billion dollars for the remaining shares. The company was renamed Zomba Label Group and Jive was integrated as a brand name.
