Aaliyah (2000)

Aaliyah (* 16th January 1979 in Brooklyn , New York City ; † 25. August 2001 in Marsh Harbor , Abaco , Bahamas ; bourgeois Aaliyah Dana Haughton ) was an American Contemporary R & B - singer and actress . She had her breakthrough with Try Again , the theme song of the film Romeo Must Die , in which she played the female lead. With over 30 million records sold worldwide, she is one of the most successful R&B singers of the last 30 years. At the age of 22, she was killed in a plane crash.

Life

youth

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in Brooklyn, New York City, in January 1979 to Michael and Diane Haughton. However, she spent most of her childhood in Detroit , Michigan with her older brother Rashad after moving house at the age of five .

As a teenager, Aaliyah first attended Detroit High School, where she received singing lessons in addition to dance and acting. Driven by her mother, a former singer, she applied to participate in the Star Search talent show in 1989 . Although she failed to emerge as the winner of the competition with her performance of My Funny Valentine , appearing on national television increased her interest in the entertainment industry; the then ten-year-old auditioned for the TV sitcom All Under One Roof in the same year and appeared in Las Vegas with her famous aunt Gladys Knight at the age of eleven .

Career

1990s

In 1993, at the age of 14, Aaliyah Haughton signed a recording deal with Blackground Records, her uncle Barry Hankerson's label. The following year she began working with R. Kelly on her debut album Age Ain't Nothing But A Number for Jive Records . Not least thanks to his successful single releases Back & Forth and At Your Best (You Are Love) , the album, released in May of the same year, sold more than five million copies worldwide over the course of the months.

There is some controversy about the relationship between Aaliyah and R. Kelly, who is 12 years older than him, mainly triggered by a marriage certificate dated August 31, 1994. The age of the then 15-year-old Aaliyah is incorrectly stated as 18. The consequent illegal marriage was annulled in February of the following year. However, both sides later denied ever having been married.

Aaliyah switched to the up- and- coming producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott at the end of 1995 . The collaborative album One In a Million , which was released in the summer of 1996, far surpassed the debut success with eight million CDs sold, including If Your Girl Only Knew , One In a Million , the Diane Warren composition The One I. Gave My Heart To , the ballad 4 Page Letter , the Marvin Gaye cover Got To Give It Up and the radio single Hot Like Fire produced six extremely successful releases.

Subsequently, the singer succeeded in 1997 with Journey to the Past , the Oscar- nominated title song for the cartoon Anastasia , to draw attention again. In the same year she had a guest appearance on the television series New York Undercover . With the single Are You That Somebody? , the theme song to the Eddie Murphy comedy Dr. Dolittle , Aaliyah was finally able to gain a musical foothold throughout Europe the following year. Despite continued success, after the release, she decided to temporarily turn her back on show business in order to finish her high school graduation.

2000-2001

Aaliyah in Berlin, 2000

After intensive acting training, Aaliyah finally succeeded in 2000 to play her first role in the martial arts film Romeo Must Die at the side of Jet Li . Similar to the film, which at 90 million US dollars became one of the most successful films of the year, the soundtrack co-produced by Aaliyah and Timbaland was also able to establish itself in the top ranks of the charts. After the previously published songs Come Back In One Piece , with rapper DMX , and I Don't Wanna were very successful, Aaliyah was even able to place himself at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with the title song Try Again . She was also nominated for a Grammy.

After further filming for the Anne Rice film adaptation of Queen of the Damned in Australia , filming of Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions began . Aaliyah returned to the USA in spring 2001 to prepare for the release of her third album. While the first release We Need a Resolution only enjoyed mixed success in the charts, the self-titled LP rose to number 2 on the US album charts.

death

On August 21, 2001, Aaliyah and her team began filming the music video for the single Rock The Boat in Los Angeles . On the following day, the decision was finally made to fly to the Bahamas for two more days in order to be able to continue working on the video there with some exterior recordings. While part of the troupe stayed on the islands after the end of filming on August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and seven of her crew members started their journey home in a Cessna 402 B for Miami . Immediately after take-off, the aircraft crashed to the ground at around 6.45 p.m. local time just a few hundred meters behind the runway. All inmates were killed. It was found later that the aircraft was overloaded by about 320 kg, as the passengers had insisted on taking all items of luggage with them, despite the pilot's warnings. A later autopsy also revealed that the pilot had been under the influence of cocaine and alcohol .

legacy

After Aaliyah's death, her record sales skyrocketed. Her album Aaliyah came to number 1 on the US Billboard charts. More singles from Aaliyah have been released. More Than A Woman became a posthumous number 1 hit in the UK . The ballad I Care 4 U was released in America thanks to massive radio support and made it to the top of the charts there without further promotion. In Germany, the album Aaliyah was successfully placed in the charts for 42 weeks.

The filming of the film Queen of the Damned could be finished before Aaliyah's death, however some sound recordings had to be dubbed by her brother Rashad. However, the film only premiered in 2002. It immediately reached number 1 in the US box office and made it to number 4 in Germany.

Her role as Zee in the Matrix sequels was changed to Nona Gaye , as only a few scenes with Aaliyah had been completed at the time. The raw material can be seen on a special edition of the Matrix DVDs.

The first greatest hits album I Care 4 U was released in the winter of 2002, it contained their most famous songs as well as some unreleased tracks. A DVD with their music videos and behind-the-scene interviews was also released. The album and the pre-release single Miss You became bestsellers. In the accompanying video, celebrity friends (including Missy Elliott, Lil 'Kim and DMX) paid tribute to the late singer. This was followed by the maxi CD Don't Know What To Tell Ya, only released in Europe . In America, on the other hand, they decided on Come Over .

Aaliyah was also nominated and honored for numerous awards after her death, including the Grammy and the American Music Award. In Germany she was nominated for the Echo for her last album Aaliyah .

In 2005, Aaliyah released other best-of albums in England and Japan: Ultimate Aaliyah (UK) and Rare Tracks And Visuals (JP), but these were rarely advertised.
